Shchedrin Days in Armenia

From 11th to 14th of June, 2008 was held a series of concerts titled "Shchedrin Days in Armenia" in the Armenian capital Yerevan as part of the 9th International Music Festival "Perspectives XXI" under the patronage of President Serzh Sarkisyan. In a special way, the festival feels obliged to workings of the leading composers of contemporary music and the performances bring together top star soloists and ensembles of high-calibre from home and abroad. For the Armenian music scene, this event is the absolute highlight in the annual cultural programme.

The works of Shchedrin from the 60ies to the 80ies are well known and regularly played in concerts in Armenia. Having the motto "Shchedrin Days in Armenia", it was a matter of gaining the acceptance and favour by the Armenian audience with the pieces mainly created during the working period of the last 15 years.

Aside of the composer well known performers of his music were invited like Olli Mustonen and Ekaterina Mechetina (both piano), Nikita Borisoglebski (violine), Sole Mustonen (oboe) and Petteri Salomaa (Bariton). The instrumental and vocal pieces which were performed on four concerts gave evidence for Shchedrins' compositional variety and talent and lead the Armenian audience to sustained enthusiasm.

On the occasion of these series of concerts Shchedrin and his wife Maya Plisetskaya in her function as honorary guest of this cultural event were given an personal audience by the Armenian President. Moreover minister Asmik Pogosjan presented Shchedrin the gold medal of ministry of culture for his exceptional contribution to the development of music culture in the whole world.
