Donation for the reconstruction of dance culture in Fukushima

During the opening of the International May Festival 2011 on 1 May with a ballet gala in Wiesbaden a donation appeal was made for the reconstruction of dance culture in Japan’s Fukushima. The initiators of that donation were the International May Festival and the Hessian State Theatre in Wiesbaden in cooperation with the „International Maya Plisetskaya and Rodion Shchedrin Foundation“. The appeal was adressed by the guest of honor of the evening the legendary ballerina assoluta Maya Plisetskaya, who for this reason presented two young Japanese ballet soloists a pair of her ballet shoes as a sign of her special bond. The donation appeal brought in the considerable amount of 3.950,- Euro on the donation account of the „International Maya Plisetskaya and Rodion Shchedrin Foundation“ and was forwarded to the theatre network ARCT in Japan. It should help to launch a revival of art and culture in the North-East part of Japan which was devastated by the great natural and nuclear disaster earlier this year. The funds will be mainly used for the organization of theater workshops with professional dancers for elementary school pupils to help them to overcome their traumatic experiences. ARCT is an initiative of artists from all over the world, which should morally and financially support people, especially children, who were affected by that disaster.
