Mariinsky Theatre presented Maya Plisetskaya Galas in New York

February 25 to 28, 2016 during the tour the Mariinsky theatre in New York presented 4 Galas dedicated to the great ballerina with the title “Tribute to Maya Plisetskaya”. The concerts took place in the Brooklin Music Academy and was attended by numerous spectators.  

The first night opened with one of the most well-known ballets danced by Maya Plisetskaya “Carmen Suite” which was written by her husband and composer Rodion Shchedrin. The Cuban choreography of Alberto Alonso calling for freedom, passion and great love was presented on the stage of the Brooklin Music Academy by the Prima of Mariinsky Theatre Diana Vishnyova. The piece “The Dying Swan” presented by Ulyana Lopatkina – another Prima of Mariinsky Theatre was the next on the stage. This performance was greatly accepted by the audience. The critics from New York Times wrote that the performance of Lopatkina was the centerpiece of the evening. The evening ended with the ballet “Bolero” in the choreography of Maurice Bejart. This time the stage was for May Plisetskaya herself only. The big screen across the stage showed the ballerina on a round dark podium where she moved to the orchestra under the conduction of Valery Gergiev. The audience gave standing ovations not only to the genius of Maya Plisetskaya but as well to the great performance of the Mariinsky Theatre who gave everyone a possibility to feel the energy of the dance and leave the evening with a smile.

The second Gala on the next day was performed by Uliana Lopatkina, Vladimir Shklyarov and Andrey Ermakov as well further soloists of the Mariinsky theatre who introduced the audience scenes from ballets which were introduced many decades ago by Anna Pavlova and Vaslav Nezhinsky who presented the Russian ballet to the western world which brought Maya Plisetskaya to us all.

The third evening was completely given to Diana Vishnyova – the most cosmopolitan ballerina of the Mariinsky Theatre. “Carmen suite” was presented in the first part of the evening. After the intermission Diana Vishnyova presented a modern solo ballet “A Woman in the Room” which was produced for the ballerina to the music of Giovanni Sollima and Rene Aubrix in the choreography of Carolin Karlson.  

The final gala on February 28, 2016 was a real gift to the audience. The pieces from the favourite ballets of Maya Plisetskaya were shown to the audience: “The love of the Rose”, “Carmen Suite”, “The Fountain of Bakhchisaray”, “The Melody”, “Giselle” and “Don Quixote” were just some of them. The final chord of the four ballet days dedicated to the Prima Ballerina Assoluta was the piece “The Dying Swan” presented by Uliana Lopatkina.   This quartet of the ballet galas was the great gift to all admirers of the genius of Maya Plisetskaya and showed the audience the real beauty and grace of the real Russian ballet on the highest level.
